A tense security incident unfolded near the White House on Monday when U.S. Secret Service officers confronted an armed and suspicious individual, leading to an exchange of gunfire and a brief lockdown of the area. According to officials, the suspect was spotted by agents patrolling the outer perimeter of the White House complex and appeared to be carrying a firearm, prompting immediate action.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated that officers identified what he described as a “visual imprint of a firearm” while observing the individual’s behavior. When agents approached, the suspect fled on foot and allegedly fired shots in the direction of law enforcement. In response, Secret Service personnel discharged their weapons, striking the suspect, who was later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The situation triggered heightened security measures, including a temporary lockdown at the White House. At the time of the incident, President Donald Trump was inside the building, while Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had passed through the area shortly beforehand. Officials confirmed there was no immediate evidence suggesting the suspect specifically targeted the vice president or his convoy.
During the chaotic encounter, a juvenile bystander was injured after being hit by the suspect. Authorities confirmed that the injuries were not life-threatening, and the individual is currently receiving medical care.
Law enforcement agencies in Washington, D.C., remain on high alert following a recent shooting connected to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. While investigators have not confirmed any link between the two incidents, officials are actively examining whether Monday’s event is connected to broader threats.
Authorities recovered a weapon from the suspect, though further details have not been disclosed. The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue.
