Only after the YouTube channel Max Tech performed a teardown of the latest M3 MacBook Air. In a report, Wccftech said that they discovered the new portable Macs included two NAND memory chips on the logic board.

Even though many potential buyers will be disappointed that Apple used the same fan-less cooling solution that causes the M3 to reach temperatures above 100 degrees Celsius, the technology giant addressed one issue. The YouTube channel conducted a series of tests to determine whether using two NAND flash chips affected SSD performance.

Running the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, it was discovered that the M3 MacBook Air's write speeds reached 2,108MB/s, 33 percent faster than the M2 MacBook Air. In contrast, Apple's latest machine's read speeds were 2,880MB/s, 82 percent faster than its direct predecessor, which is quite an impressive result.

The commendable part is that Apple does not require customers to upgrade to the 512GB storage variants of the M3 MacBook Air to experience faster read and write speeds, as these results were obtained with the 256GB versions.

While 256GB of onboard storage remains comically low in 2024, especially given that there is no easy way to upgrade the internal memory because the chips are soldered to the logic board, we can forgive Apple for learning from its mistakes. Fans must wait for the company to provide its customers with 512GB of storage for the base models.
