Some of today’s most popular shows feature violence and sex in almost gross amounts. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, House Of Cards, these are just some examples that seem to reflect the modern audience’s program preferences. As such, Apple’s desire to feature only family-friendly content with absolutely none of qualities that make the previously-mentioned shows so binge-worthy is so baffling.
Apple is reportedly willing to spend $1 billion to produce original content without giving any indications that it knows which direction it will take. However, in a recent report by Bloomberg, at least one aspect of content-production appears to have been established: The shows need to be family-friendly.
This means that Apple only wants either comedies or dramas, such as shows like the hit NBC program, This Is Us. This news certainly clears up at least some parts of the Cupertino firm’s ambitions, but not nearly enough to provide the industry with clues to piece what the tech giant’s ambitions really are.
For now, the only things that have been revealed is that Apple is collecting high-profile Hollywood producers and show makers, it wants to create original content, and it wants to reach a global audience. Other than that, even showbiz insiders are still in the dark as to what shows, which media outlets, and which actors are going to be on Apple’s list.
As Recode notes, the matter of focusing only on content that may be safe for kids to consume might be a good idea. Apple has never made quality TV content before, so a failed project that caused no offense would be much better than bombing in its attempt to be edgy.
On the other hand, it would seem that Apple is approaching TV production the way it approaches tech decisions. These two industries could not be more different, so it would likely be to Apple’s best interest to simply allow its lineup of showbiz industry bigwigs to make the shows that actually work.
