NEW YORK, Dec. 05, 2016 -- Dr. Janet Allan, Dean Emeritus at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council. She will be sharing her knowledge and expertise in Community Health, Primary Healthcare and Research (regarding women and weight management), and NP Education and Practice.

Dr. Allan has been active in the healthcare industry for over 50 years. She has been Dean at UMB for 12 years. Dr. Allan obtained her PhD in Medical Anthropology from the University of California, San Francisco and Berkeley, in 1986. She became involved in her current profession because of her passion for both Education and Nursing.
UMB is Maryland's only public health, law, and human services university. Seven professional and graduate schools train the majority of the state's physicians, graduate nurses, dentists, lawyers, social workers, and pharmacists.
Dr. Allan’s day-to-day responsibilities include fiduciary oversight, development, strategic planning, faculty and staff recruitment and evaluation, academic quality and development, policies, and working with state and federal legislators regarding SON projects and the national nursing agenda.
Dr. Allan attributes her success throughout her career to a love for what she does and overall persistence. She is proud to have been able to make a difference in the lives of students at the University of Maryland and other universities where she served as a faculty member/researcher and honored to have made contributions to the fields of women’s health and primary care practice of NPs through over 150 peer-reviewed publications and presentations. She is also privileged to serve as the Vice Chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force.
Dr. Allan’s many awards and honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award, MD Nurse’s Association; Researcher of the Year Award, Southern Nursing Research Society; Lifetime Achievement Award, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties; Award for Care of People with AIDS/HIV Infection, US Secretary of Health; and being elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She was appointed Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2002. Her long-term goals include continuing her involvement in Nursing.
Dr. Allan is affiliated with the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Academy of Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).
Dr. Allan is honored to have served as a Girl Scout for a decade and proud of being the first person in her family to attend college. She is happily married to Dr. Beverly Hall.
In her free time, Dr. Allan enjoys yoga, walking, working on jigsaw puzzles, traveling, and reading.
