‘American Crime Story’ Season 3 Recalls Murder of Gianni Versace in Miami; Lady Gaga Cast as Donatella Versace

‘American Crime Story’ season 3 is set to put focus on the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace in his Miami Mansion Home in 1997. Lady Gaga has been cast to play Gianni’s sister Donatella.

According to UPI, the third season of the true crime anthology television series intended as a spinoff of the highly popular horror anthology series ‘American Horror Story’, will put focus on the infamous murder of Italian designer Gianni Versace on the steps of his mansion in Miami, Florida.

Versace was shot dead in July 1997 by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Cunanan later used the same gun to shoot himself on a boat eight days following Versace’s murder. Cunanan killed at least four other people over a three-month span before targeting Gianni.

Donatella Versace took over Versace S.p.A. as the new head of design following Gianni’s death. According to Rolling Stone, actress and singer-songwriter Lady Gaga has been cast to play Gianni’s famous fashion designer sister in the upcoming season, entitled “Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story.”

Lady Gaga will reunite with executive producer Ryan Murphy, who she worked with on ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ and ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke.’ Production for season 3 is reportedly scheduled to begin in early April 2017.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Murphy discussed season 3 during a panel at EW’s PopFest. He said, “I was always very moved and freaked out by the Versace assassination, and I thought it was a really great story to do because it’s a manhunt season… Serial killer Andrew Cunanan] killed four people and then Versace, and was on the loose. We’re exploring the reasons of how he got away with being undetected.”

He added, “The tragedy of the Versace murder was that it should not have happened. He should have been caught by then. But he wasn’t caught because he was targeting gay people, and people didn’t care. That’s why Gianni Versace was killed, for the most part.”

Murphy concluded, “So it’s a really tragic story and I’ve always said the thing that makes me cry the most in the world is lost potential, or lost possibility, and I think he was such an amazing force taken too soon for reasons which he shouldn’t have been. That is a true crime story in America, so we’re tackling that.”

‘American Crime Story’ season 3 is expected to begin production in April 2017. The series was developed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who executive produce together with Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson.
