'Agents of SHIELD' Season 6 Air Date and Spoilers: Season 5's Scars That Season 6 Will Hopefully Answer

The "Agents of SHIELD" season 6 green light announcement came in a few days before its final season 5 episode aired last May. News of renewal is sure to assuage the show's fans as season 5 just wrapped up with a roller-coaster ride, with the season finale ending with very drastic losses for the SHIELD agents while being on the edge of events prior to “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Season 5 took the SHIELD team to a future where Earth was destroyed and alternate timelines were explored. The latter part of the season focused on stopping the Earth-less future the team had a glimpse of from happening.

The season finale gave fans the heartbreaking loss of Leopold Fitz, portrayed by Iain De Caestecker, who was buried under rubble in the episode's climax. Losses to the team weren't limited to what appeared to be the violent disruption of the Fitz-Simmons love team. Phil Coulson and Melinda May, portrayed by Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen, respectively, were shown willingly retiring to the very real island of Tahiti due to Coulson nearing his body's physical death once again.

There are still no confirmations of who among the cast will be dropped from the regular billing, which leaves the fate of characters in “Agents of SHIELD” season 6 to much speculation. Still, Leo Fitz's and Phil Coulson's deaths can still be potentially reverted as the current season finale ending still leaves enough wiggle room for the show's two beloved characters to make a comeback.

Fans may be disappointed that the confirmed "Agents of SHIELD" season 6 renewal is only 13 episodes worth of material compared to the usual 20 plus episodes of the show's previous seasons. Aside from the abbreviated renewal, the show's season premiere has also been pushed to a summer release in 2019 rather than the usual fall or winter release of previous seasons.

The shorter episode order and delayed season premiere may have been affected by changes in the Marvel-verse due to events in "Avengers: Infinity War." Also, while there has been no confirmation that “Agents of SHIELD” season 6 will be the last season for the show, the show's own trajectory seems to be heading towards an “end game” situation for the titular “Agents of SHIELD.”
