AMD has been on a roll recently and the announcement for its new EPYC 7371 Threadripper processor threatens to absolutely bury whatever Intel has to offer. This new monster of a chip comes with 64 cores from the Zen 2 line and that is a combination that produces a lot of power. It would seem that it was made specifically for heavy workloads such as those commonly attributed to data centers.
For a full breakdown of what this new EPYC 7371 Threadripper from AMD is capable of, Anandtech can oblige with a whole list of pertinent details for interested tech enthusiasts to consume. Apart from the headache-inducing number of details available in its coverage of the new chip, there’s an interesting aspect featured, as well. It would appear that this processor is not listed on the website of AMD.
This suggests a few things, the most likely of which is that AMD intends to offer this processor to only a few select customers. Specifically, the target might be for data centers or other businesses with similar demands for high-capacity processors. On that note, if there is enough demand for the chip, it’s likely to become available on a much wider scale.
It’s also likely that this new generation of AMD cores will cost quite a bit more than its predecessors. As The Motley Fool notes, the second generation of the Threadripper processors cost significantly more than the first with double the number of cores. With the EPYC 7371 coming up to 64 cores, the price is likely to go quite a bit higher, as well.
For now, the AMD chip is not available on the market and probably only being offered to customers with bulk-order capabilities and the corresponding need to merit buying this processor. For PC users with high-end rigs who want to get the chip, they’ll simply have to wait.
