“13 Reasons Why” Author Jay Asher Looks Forward To Season 2: Which Cliffhangers Would He Want The Netflix Series To Answer In The Installment?

Netflix's “13 Reasons Why” is one of the hottest small-screen shows early this year. The series, based on a best-selling book by Jay Asher about a boy listening to a series of confessional tapes left by a friend who killed herself, has aroused both book and Netflix fans on what the Selena Gomez-backed show is about.

E! said the series, which had a 13-episode run on the streaming service, ended with some serious cliffhangers that anyone who would watched the show will wonder whether a Season 2 order is in place. Because the answers in the show’s cliffhangers were not in Asher’s book (nor was a book sequel in place), the author was asked whether he is interested with the show’s second installment too.

Chris Harnick for the site wrote, “3 Reasons Why ended with Clay (Dylan Minnette) finally listening to all of Hannah Baker's (Katherine Langford) tapes—the 13 reasons why she killed herself—and adding a 14th tape: a confession from Bryce (Justin Prentice) admitting he raped Hannah. The original tapes found their way to Mr. Porter (Derek Luke), who was the subject of the 13th tape, but another set was given to Hannah's parents (Kate Walsh and Brian D'Arcy James) as their case against the school in regards to her suicide went ahead full steam ahead.”

Apparently, he agreed with the fans, although fell short about his participation in the series and told Entertainment Weekly, "I'd just like a continuation of all those characters. I'm curious as well. What happens to Clay (Dylan Minnette)? How do people react to what Alex (Miles Heizer) did at the very end? What's going to happen to Mr. Porter (Derek Luke)? I'd thought of a sequel at some point. I'd brainstormed it, but decided I wasn't going to write it. So I'd love to see it."

However, he did say that although Netflix is open to do a second installment to address the cliffhanger, he had never gotten around to do a second installment for his book. He added, “There’s never going to be a sequel. [But] you can explore that world further in a different medium, and the book will still be able to be itself. I don’t think the show is affecting what the book is saying.”
