It looks like Apple is in the midst of hiking the prices of selected products. It started with the ridiculously expensive $52,999 Mac Pro and, if speculations are indeed correct, its upcoming smartphone flagship, the iPhone 12, might get a price increase as well.
However, such a price increase is justifiable and expected, according to Forbes. After all, the flagship will be loaded with the latest technology and top-of-the-line features which will inevitably jack up its production cost.
One such cost-inflating feature is 5G support. iPhone 12 will be the brand’s first phone ever to feature this 5G connectivity. With its promise high connection speeds, Apple just can’t afford to be left behind its competitors or customers loyal to the brand might defect.
Thus, the iPhone 12 needs to be 5G-enabled. Naturally, putting in the components needed for this type of connectivity will add to the cost of the handset.
Another aspect that could jack up the iPhone 12’s cost is its screen. Unlike the base model of the iPhone 11 that only featured the cheaper LCD screen, various reports have already pointed out that all iPhone 12 variants will sport the more expensive OLED display. The new display will also have a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz to match the phone’s competition.
Then there’s the phone’s camera assembly, which will have more sensors and lenses. The iPhone 12’s time-of-flight feature, as well as its improved optical zoom, will likely increase its production cost as well.
Considering the new features of its camera assembly, the improved display, and its 5G components, it’s easy to imagine why a price increase is but inevitable. Based on Forbes’ estimates, these components will likely increase its production cost by around $100.
Thankfully, reports are saying that Apple decided not to pass on to consumers the phone’s increased production cost in its entirety. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the company will just increase the base iPhone 12 model’s price by $50, as reported by Firstpost.
At the moment, Apple has not yet officially announced the iPhone 12 price. However, fans can expect it to cost slightly more than the $700 price tag of the iPhone 11 when it launched.
