iOS store removes cryptocurrency exchange app ShapeShift

According to latest reports, leading tech giant and iPhone maker Apple has removed ShapeShift app from App Store.

Reddit users noted that a “ShapeShift” search on the App Store returned “nothing but games”. The iOS app link on the official ShapeShift website is also redirecting to iTunes homepage.

One Reddit user “cm18” said: “Apple is facing increasing hostility from the Feds and is probably cleaning house as much as possible to give the feds little excuse for going after the iPhone. The recent statement by James Comey regarding encryption indicates that there's a chill in the air.

Also, Dash was removed from the Jaxx wallet on the request of apple. Anything that obfuscates is now being targeted.

The enemies are those in power, not Apple.”


The removal of ShapeShift follows reports of fake bitcoin wallet apps getting listed on Apple’s App Store. These fake wallets, which copied the name and logo of the authentic ones, included Breadwallet, Blockchain, GreenBits and others. Apple’s app review process, which has been touted as one of the most rigorous one, came under fire post this incident.

No official word has been received by Apple or ShapeShift on the matter. According to Silicon Angle, speculation on this latest development centers around a “bizarre ruling” from Apple that it will only allow apps that support certain cryptocurrencies.
