Muki Shey

Muki Shey is a Senior Research Officer at the Clinical Infectious Disease Research Initiative (CIDRI) in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. His current research is focused on HIV and TB and understanding the reasons for high mortality in severe HIV-associated TB patients. Muki previously worked at Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation as a Scientist and Laboratory Manager in the South African Endpoint Assay Laboratory focusing on clinical trials of novel TB vaccines. Before then he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, where his research was focused on understanding the mechanisms of HIV transmission across the female genital tract.

Muki holds a PhD in Clinical Sciences and Immunology from the University of Cape Town where he conducted research on understanding the genetic and immunological reasons why people respond differently to mycobacterial infection (including Mtb, the causative agent for tuberculosis, TB). Muki has published several articles in international peer-reviewed journals on TB, HIV and other infectious diseases.
