R. Michael Holmes Jr. is the Jim Moran Professor of Strategic Management at Florida State University. Michael holds a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and a B.S. from The University of Alabama. He also has an appointment at the University of Johannesburg.

His research focuses primarily into two areas. The first area, the microfoundations of strategy and entrepreneurship, explains how leaders’ individual characteristics (e.g., experience, gender, personality, etc.) shape the behaviors and performance (e.g., profits) of their firms. The second area, which focuses on institutions, examines the factors (e.g., corporate political activity, culture, history, etc.) that shape government policies and, in turn, the influence of such institutions on firm strategy and firm performance.

Michael’s work has been accepted for publication in Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Perspectives, Academy of Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personnel Psychology, and Strategic Management Journal, among other outlets.

Michael teaches primarily in the MBA and doctoral programs at Florida State. In addition, he speaks regularly at research, teaching, and small business management workshops where he helps train doctoral students, faculty, and managers. His work has been presented at universities and conferences in 14 different countries, and he has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research, teaching, and service.
