I graduated in modern languages (Arabic, French) from St Andrews, 1998, then studied modern Middle East history and politics at Oxford (DPhil 2002, postdoc 2002-4), taught modern history at Princeton, SOAS, Oxford (since 2009). Research focuses on European, esp. French, imperialism in Africa, the modern and contemporary Middle East and North Africa. I teach European and global history since the 18th century, and Middle East politics.
