Gabrielle Hogan-Brun is Swiss and has taught in universities at Los Angeles (UCLA), Cambridge, Oxford, Vilnius, Bristol and Basel. Her research projects are in the area of language, migration and education. They have resulted in an extensive body of innovative publications on the changing language dynamics in the Baltic republics and across Central/Eastern Europe; language use and attitudes to language use in education and at the workplace; language practices and educational needs; bi- and multilingualism and language loyalty; language policy and citizenship (testing); issues of language and identity/ethnicity.
Her primary research interest is in language planning and practices in multilingual settings. She has worked with various European organizations on aspects of language policy. Her current focus is on the economics of multilingualism. She was co-editor of the journal Current Issues in Language Planning, serves on several international language and editorial boards and is founding editor of the book series Palgrave Studies in Minority Languages and Communities.
Her latest book is Linguanomics. What is the Market Potential of Multilingualism? It is a factual exploration on the benefits and costs of multilingualism and a journey into the potent emotional response this topic engenders.
