Thomas Daum

Agricultural Economist, University of Hohenheim
Thomas Daum is a research fellow at the Institute of Agricultural Science in the Tropics (Hans-Ruthenberg-Institute). His research focuses on agricultural development strategies that are sustainable from an economic, social and environmental perspective. For example, he explored the neglected governance challenges of agricultural mechanisation in Ghana and developed a smartphone app that allows farm families to record their time use in Zambia.

He is part of the Program of Accompanying Research for Agricultural Innovation (PARI), which aims to contribute to sustainable agricultural growth and food and nutrition security in Africa and India. PARI is supporting the Agricultural Innovation Centers Initiative led by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

He studied Business Administration (B.A.) in Mannheim and Budapest and holds a M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Hohenheim. He has worked at the Institute for Land Use Economics in the Tropics and Subtropics and made an internship at the Department of Land Policy and Land Management at the GIZ. He is working as a freelance journalist for the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
