Research Fellow, Political Science, UCL
I am a political scientist working on perceptions of the economy. My book ‘Rigged: understanding of "the economy" in Brexit Britain’, published in 2020, by Manchester University Press, is based on an ethnographic study in an English south coast city. I found a divide in how people on low and high incomes viewed the economy.
Curiously, in political science we neglect how people think about the economy in the broader sense. As we move out of the austerity and Brexit eras into the COVID unknowns, empirical research in this area is going to be crucially important. I am currently working on the UCL based mental models in political economy (MENMOPE) project, funded by UKRI. It explores ideas about the economy across five countries; Denmark, France, Germany, the UK and USA. I am conducting the qualitative strand, interviewing politicians from those countries about their economic ideas.
People living on low incomes already see the economy as 'rigged' – so what next after coronavirus?
