Roger Awan-Scully

Professor of Political Science, Cardiff University
I was educated at Lancaster University and the University of Durham, before gaining a PhD at the Ohio State University. I was Lecturer in European Politics at Brunel University from 1997-1999, before joining Aberystwyth University in January 2000. At Aberystwyth, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004, Reader in 2006, and became Professor of Political Science in 2007. I was also appointed as Director of the Institute of Welsh Politics at Aberystwyth in 2009. I moved to Cardiff University in March 2012, as Professor of Political Science associated with the Wales Governance Centre.

I was accepted as an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2010, and elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2011. I was Co-Director of the 2011 Welsh Referendum Study (ESRC Grant RES-000-22-4496) and of the 2011 Welsh Election Study (ESRC Grant RES-062-23-2625).

My research and teaching has focussed on political representation in the European Union and, increasingly, on devolution in the UK. I am the author of Becoming Europeans? Attitudes, Behaviour and Socialization in the European Parliament (Oxford University Press, 2005), and co-author of Representing Europe’s Citizens? Electoral Institutions and the Failure of Parliamentary Representation in the European Union (Oxford University Press, 2007) and Wales Says Yes: Devolution and the 2011 Welsh Referendum (University of Wales Press, 2012). I have also published in a number of major journals, including the British Journal of Political Science, the European Journal of Political Research, the Journal of Common Market Studies, Electoral Studies, Publius, Legislative Studies Quarterly and Political Psychology.

I am a former Co-Editor of the UACES-Routledge Contemporary European Studies Book Series, and am currently Associate Editor of Parliamentary Affairs and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Legislative Studies and the European Journal of Government and Economics.
