The Xiaomi 12 series has been on sale in China for a while now, and the company has officially confirmed the new flagship phones will enter the global markets. While the announced pricing is in US Dollars, the phones are not actually arriving in stores in the United States.
For a bit of context, former US President Donald Trump labeled Xiaomi as one of the “Communist Chinese military companies” that placed it on the list of blacklisted companies to receive investments from Americans and US organizations in early 2021. However, the decision was overturned and the ban was lifted in May last year.
Xiaomi’s presence in the US remained limited, though. So when the company unveiled the Xiaomi 12 series, it seemed unlikely that the flagship phones would ship to the US. And that appears to be the case following the Xiaomi 12 global launch on Tuesday.
The Verge reports that the three-device lineup of Xiaomi 12 will not reach US stores. But the company confirmed its new phones will be sold in various regions outside China, including Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro has a 6.73-inch AMOLED display and is the only phone in the series with Samsung E5 material, a “dynamic 120Hz LTPO” panel, and 3200 x 1440 resolution. The regular Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12X both have 6.28-inch AMOLED screens with a 120Hz refresh rate and 2400 x 1080 resolution.
While all phones have 50MP main cameras, the official specs sheet indicates the Xiaomi 12 Pro exclusive sports IMX707 sensor. The high-end model also features a 50MP ultra-wide angle lens and 50MP telephoto camera. The Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12X both feature a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 5MP telemacro lens. All three models have 32MP front cameras.
The Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while the Xiaomi 12X uses the sub-premium chip Snapdragon 870. Another notable advantage of the Pro model is that it features quad speakers while the rest of the series only has dual speakers. Although the entire lineup features audio components developed with Harman Kardon.
Not surprisingly, the Xiaomi 12 Pro has the biggest battery with a 4600mAh capacity. It is the only phone in the lineup that supports 120W wired fast charging with Xiaomi’s HyperCharge tech. The Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12X sport 4500mAh batteries with up to 67W wired charging rate. Prices start at $999 (8GB+256GB), $749 for the Xiaomi 12 (8GB+128GB), and $649 for the Xiaomi 12X (8GB+128GB).
