The Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing thousands of screenwriters and media professionals, has voiced strong opposition to a potential merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery. According to Bloomberg News, the union warned that such a deal would further erode competition in the entertainment industry, harm creative workers, and threaten free expression.
In a statement to Bloomberg, the WGA criticized the media industry’s ongoing consolidation trend, stating that “merger after merger has harmed workers, diminished competition and free speech, and wasted hundreds of billions of dollars better invested in organic growth.” The organization added that combining Warner Bros Discovery with another major studio or streaming service would be “a disaster for writers, for consumers, and for competition.” The guild emphasized it intends to urge regulators to block any such transaction.
Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison, has emerged as a key contender to acquire Warner Bros Discovery. Backed by strong financial support and political connections, Ellison reportedly offered nearly $24 per share for the company. However, the Warner Bros Discovery board rejected the proposal earlier this week, according to Reuters.
Both Warner Bros Discovery and the WGA have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comment, while Paramount Skydance declined to comment on the report.
The WGA’s stance reflects growing concern among Hollywood labor groups over media consolidation’s impact on job stability, creative opportunities, and marketplace diversity. With regulators already scrutinizing large-scale mergers across industries, this potential deal is expected to face significant opposition from labor unions and antitrust authorities alike.
