‘Veep’ season 6’s episode 1, titled “Omaha,” will feature Selina Meyer as she returns with a vengeance after her failed presidential bid in the fifth season. Showrunner David Mandel revealed their sources of inspiration for the ex-president’s new life out of the White House.
The synopsis for season 6’s premiere episode posted on TV Guide reads, “In the Season 6 premiere, Selina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) tries to secure her legacy one year after losing the presidency. Meanwhile, Dan (Reid Scott) tries to fit in at his new job; and Amy's (Anna Chlumsky) D.C.-style campaign tactics are a little too rough for her new coworkers.”
Selina Meyer is set to make her much-anticipated comeback on the small screens as she tries to pick up the pieces of a failed presidential bid due to a complex manipulation of constitutional law back in season 5. Her right-hand woman, Amy Brookheimer, will be back to bring in her all-out support for Meyer but her D.C.-style campaign strategy may be too much for her new colleagues to handle.
The promo for season 6 opens to the former president talking about her return in a televised interview. Selina says, “Well this last year has been fun. You know, really fun.” She looks to be feigning enthusiasm with her strained voice and exaggerated facial expressions.
She continues, “The loss hurt but I did take this opportunity to re-acquaint myself with an old friend of mine by the name of Selina Meyer.” In the next scene, she surprises Congressman Ryan during a work event to which she threatens that she will destroy him “in ways that are so creative they will honor me for it at Kennedy Center.”
In the next scenes, Selina is seen attempting to get on the public’s good side by making appearances at community events as well as refugee camps.
According to Variety, showrunner David Mandel and star Julia Louis-Dreyfus discussed season 6 during a panel at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas last March. Mandel said not to expect references about President Trump nor his administration. Louis-Dreyfus said, “I think that we’ve set up this premise for our show which is this alternate political universe… We don’t have any real-life celebrities on the show, we don’t have real-life journalists, and frankly, with political history, we don’t really reference anyone beyond Reagan.”
However, Mandel teased that former President Barack Obama could have an impact on Selina, considering her current situation. Mandel said, “Please keep your eyes on Obama… What’s very exciting for us — and this is not giving away stuff — is as you’ve seen him sign his book deal for a lot of money, don’t be surprised if you see Selina sign a book deal, although maybe for not as much money.”
He also revealed that the show’s writers look to former presidents of the United States for inspiration on Selina’s new life after the White House. He added, “Jimmy Carter [did] actual humanitarian work. I think as you start to think about it, you’ll start to get an idea of where the new season is going.”
‘Veep’ season 6’s episode 1, titled “Omaha,” is scheduled to air on HBO on April 16, 2017. It will be followed by episode 2, titled “Library,” scheduled to be released on April 23.
