Massive protests from the supporters of Bernie Sanders, senator from Vermont, who was a rival of Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries rocked the first day of the national convention, where Hillary Clinton is expected to be nominated as the Presidential runner for 2016 election. The protest was ignited by series of 20,000 emails leaked by hackers and published at Wikileaks that showed that the party establishment was not neutral which it was supposed to be during the primaries and attempted to sabotage the campaign of Bernie Sanders. The leak has led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee.
The crowd loudly started shouting their opposition to the nomination of Hillary Clinton as the Presidential candidate. Many kept shouting, “We want Bernie” amid attempts from the leaders to calm them down. In addition to that, many got agitated by the mention of Hillary Clinton during the opening prayer, a moment which was supposed to be apolitical. Many felt that the convention was operating like an arm of the Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
Mr. Sanders was able to finally add some calm to the convention though many booed when he endorsed Hillary again in a speech, which was brought forward by several hours. Mr. Sanders was successful in pointing that many of camp sanders’ agenda got included in the platform and the only way to make sure those are implemented is to make sure Hillary wins the White House, not Donald Trump.
However, the Democratic establishment is fearful of what else might get released after this email scandal.
