U.S. stock index futures climbed on Monday evening after President Donald Trump postponed his proposed 50% tariffs on the European Union until July 9, easing market tensions. The move followed a constructive call with EU President Ursula von der Leyen and promises of renewed trade negotiations. While trading volumes remained low due to the Memorial Day holiday, investor sentiment improved after Friday’s selloff.
S&P 500 Futures rose 1.1% to 5,879.25, Nasdaq 100 Futures gained 1.3% to 21,236.50, and Dow Jones Futures advanced nearly 1% to 42,069.0 by 19:11 ET (23:11 GMT). The relief rally came after sharp declines last week, with the S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Dow Jones losing 0.7%, 1%, and 0.6%, respectively.
Despite the positive news, markets remain cautious. Trump also threatened to impose tariffs on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other smartphone imports, pushing Apple shares down 3% on Friday. His push for domestic manufacturing and “reciprocal” tariffs continues to inject uncertainty into global trade dynamics.
Meanwhile, investor focus shifts to Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), set to release its Q1 earnings after the bell on Wednesday. Nvidia, seen as a leading indicator for AI industry trends, is expected to post strong results, fueled by continued spending from major AI hyperscalers. The earnings will be closely watched for insights into the AI chip market’s momentum and Nvidia’s strategy amid tightening U.S. export controls affecting its China operations.
Nvidia’s report could provide direction for the broader tech sector, already heavily influenced by AI-related optimism. Traders are eyeing whether the chip giant can maintain its growth trajectory amid rising geopolitical and regulatory challenges.
