A United Nations peacekeeper was killed and several others were wounded after a projectile struck a UNIFIL position near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr on Sunday. Indonesia's foreign ministry confirmed that the fallen peacekeeper was an Indonesian national, with three additional Indonesian soldiers injured by indirect artillery fire near the same location.
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force deployed along the Lebanon-Israel border to monitor hostilities between Israeli troops and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters, stated that the origin of the projectile remains unknown and that a full investigation has been launched. "We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," the mission said in an official statement.
This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of peacekeepers being caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon. Just weeks earlier, on March 6, Ghanaian UN peacekeepers were critically injured when their battalion headquarters was struck by missile fire. Israel's military later acknowledged that its tank fire had hit the UN position, stating its forces had been responding to an anti-tank missile launched by Hezbollah.
The violence in the region escalated after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel on March 2 in solidarity with Tehran, following an Israeli and U.S. strike on Iran. The attack triggered a new Israeli military offensive against Hezbollah across southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL, whose mission is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2026, has repeatedly urged all parties to respect international law and safeguard UN personnel. Indonesia strongly condemned the attack, calling any harm to peacekeepers unacceptable, and reiterated its opposition to Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.
The international community continues to call for accountability and restraint as the conflict threatens regional stability and the safety of UN forces on the ground.
