Turkish jobless rate rises to 13.5 pct in December

Turkish jobless rate rose in the month of December. The unemployment rate rose 3.1 percentage points to 13.5 percent, showed Turkish Statistical Institute. The number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over increased by 1 million 11 thousand to 4 million 302 thousand persons in the period of December 2018 in Turkey compared with the same period of the previous year. In the same period, non-agricultural jobless rate rose 3.3 percentage point to 15.6 percent.

The number of employed persons dropped by 633k to 27.65 million in December. The rate of employment fell 1.5 percentage point, coming in at 45.4 percent. The number of agricultural employment dropped by 375k and the number of non-agricultural employment fell by 258k. According to the distribution of employment by sector; 17.3 percent was employed in agriculture, 19.8 percent was in industry, 5.8 percent was in construction and 57.0 percent was in services.

The number of persons in the labour force rose 378k in December to 31 million 957. Labour force participation rate came in at 52.4 percent without any change. The ratio of persons working without any social security relating to the main job rose 0.1 percentage point to 33.4 percent.

Seasonally adjusted employment rate came in at 46.4 percent and unemployment rate came in at 12.7 percent. Seasonally adjusted employment rate dropped 0.5 percentage point to 46.4 percent.
