President-elect Donald Trump's transition team has dismissed a recent report claiming he intends to ban all transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military. The report, published by The Times on Monday, alleged that Trump was considering an executive order to medically discharge approximately 15,000 transgender service members while also barring new transgender recruits. The transition team has firmly denied the claims, labeling them as baseless speculation.

The Trump administration’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, pushed back against the allegations, stating that no decisions regarding transgender military service have been made. “Unnamed sources speculating on this issue have no idea what they’re talking about,” Leavitt said in a statement to Newsweek. She emphasized that official policies would only be announced directly by the president-elect or authorized representatives.
This denial contrasts with the history of Trump’s previous term when he reinstated a partial ban on transgender individuals in the military in 2018. That policy prevented new transgender recruits but allowed those already serving to remain.

Branaman also highlighted the financial and operational costs of removing seasoned personnel, particularly as the U.S. military has struggled to meet recruitment goals, falling short by 41,000 recruits last year.

If reinstated, a transgender military ban would mark another reversal in the long-standing debate over their service in the armed forces. Transgender individuals were first allowed to serve openly under the Obama administration.
