U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated a major legislative win on Thursday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, promoting his newly passed tax-cut and border security bill. Speaking to thousands of supporters, Trump praised the legislation, calling it his “big, beautiful bill,” and said it fulfills every major promise he made to Iowans in 2024.
The House of Representatives passed the bill earlier that day, sending it to Trump’s desk for final approval. Trump confirmed he will sign it into law on July 4 at a White House ceremony, aligning with the deadline he had set.
The bill includes sweeping reforms: the largest tax cut, spending reduction, and border security investment in U.S. history, according to Trump. It also allocates billions to expand immigration enforcement and deportations, while slashing health and food assistance programs. However, the Congressional Budget Office estimates it will add $3.4 trillion to the existing $36.2 trillion national debt.
Trump’s Iowa visit reinforced his image as a president who delivers on promises to his conservative base. The rally also highlighted his recent successes, including brokering a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Trump criticized Democrats for opposing the bill, attributing it to personal animosity, and said the vote will be a key issue in the 2026 midterm elections. Some Republicans, however, fear that Medicaid cuts in the bill could hurt their electoral prospects.
Despite local concerns over trade policies and labor shortages, several rally attendees expressed strong support for Trump, especially regarding immigration and rising grocery prices. Only one of the five interviewed was aware of the tax bill but praised its focus on border security funding.
