“Gwent” is the phenomenal card game in the “Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” game and it seems there will be a standalone release just for the game within a game. A recent move by company “CD Projekt” to trademark the name “Gwent” as well as the name “Gwent: The Witcher Card Game” sparked speculations that the Polish game company will follow in the footsteps of “Blizzard Entertainment” when they released “Hearthstone.”
The move was first covered by Nerdleaks when “CD Projekt” filed a class 9 and 14 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, which pertains to software, video games, and such. The filing includes a logo as well, which will likely be the official logo for the game. The logo will be applicable for branding everything from the game itself to any paraphernalia pertaining to the game.
Now, it is possible for the studio to go down the “Pokémon” route and start selling actual, physical “Gwent” cards, but this is not likely. For one thing, it would involve far too much effort on the part of “CD Projekt” even if they decide to engage a third-party company that specializes in this business model. For another, online card battles are where the real money is.
According to a 2015 summary by “Blizzard,” their “Hearthstone” card game brought in $20 million a month. The expansion pack that was released back in April was also reportedly expected to increase revenue by at least 50 percent. “Blizzard” achieved this without ever having to sell cardboard versions of their cards either.
The unprecedented success that the “Warcraft” spinoff is experiencing has even spurred “Bethesda” to start working on their own version based on the “Elder Scrolls” series. As such, it’s not really surprising that “CD Projekt” would try to capitalize on the popularity of “Gwent,” particularly since a lot of their players are already playing the game anyway. It would be interesting to play against other players.
