Toyota Motor reported a seventh consecutive monthly decline in global vehicle sales in August, as weaker overseas demand and a sharp downturn in China weighed on the Japanese automaker’s performance.
Toyota, including its Lexus luxury brand, sold 823,618 vehicles worldwide during August, representing a 7.5% decline from the same month a year earlier. The latest figures highlight continued pressure on the automaker as challenging market conditions affect demand across several major international markets.
Overseas sales dropped 8.9% year over year to 697,870 vehicles. By comparison, Toyota’s domestic sales remained relatively resilient, edging 0.2% higher to 134,748 vehicles.
China was a major source of weakness, with Toyota vehicle sales falling 22.8% to 118,449 units in August. The decline extended the automaker’s prolonged slowdown in the world’s largest automotive market, where intense competition and shifting consumer preferences continue to reshape the industry.
Toyota said demand in China’s gasoline-powered vehicle segment, which includes hybrid models, remained weak amid higher gasoline prices. The company has faced growing competition in the country as consumers increasingly turn toward electric and other new-energy vehicles offered by domestic manufacturers.
Elsewhere in Asia, Toyota sales in India declined nearly 8%. The automaker attributed the drop mainly to a temporary reduction in sales volumes associated with the introduction of a new sales system.
The Philippines also recorded a notable decline, with Toyota sales falling 14.3% compared with the same period last year.
The August figures added to Toyota’s weaker performance so far this year. During the first eight months, the automaker sold 6.66 million vehicles globally, down 3.6% from the corresponding period a year earlier.
Toyota’s latest sales results underscore the challenges facing global automakers as competition intensifies across Asian markets, particularly in China, while changing consumer demand continues to influence sales of gasoline-powered, hybrid and electric vehicles.
