HUTCHMED said Tuesday that AstraZeneca has submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval for a combination therapy aimed at treating patients with advanced lung cancer.
The regulatory application covers the ORPATHYS-TAGRISSO combination, bringing the treatment closer to potential availability in the U.S. market if it receives FDA clearance. The submission represents an important regulatory step for HUTCHMED and AstraZeneca as the companies continue developing new targeted treatment options for lung cancer patients.
ORPATHYS is being jointly developed by HUTCHMED and AstraZeneca, while AstraZeneca is responsible for the drug's commercialization. The collaboration combines HUTCHMED's oncology drug development capabilities with AstraZeneca's global commercial reach and established presence in lung cancer treatment.
The proposed therapy pairs ORPATHYS with TAGRISSO, AstraZeneca's established lung cancer medicine. Combination therapies have become an important area of oncology research as pharmaceutical companies seek treatment approaches capable of addressing complex disease pathways and improving outcomes for patients with advanced cancers.
The FDA application could expand the companies' presence in the competitive U.S. lung cancer treatment market. Regulatory approval would also represent a significant milestone for the ORPATHYS development program and strengthen the broader oncology partnership between HUTCHMED and AstraZeneca.
The companies have been working together to advance ORPATHYS as part of their efforts to develop precision medicines for cancer patients.
