What started as a franchise for children has since evolved to include themes that are intended to wring tears out of the eyes of adults. The newest trailer for “Toy Story 4” just proves that Pixar is becoming increasingly adept at touching the existential buttons that are in every grown-up. While there is nothing particularly sad about the clip, its implications are staggering.
As The Verge notes, this new trailer is indicative of Pixar being quite insistent that adults should cry in movie theatres as much or perhaps even more than the children will. Finding a purpose in life after losing the one that existed before is something that all adults can relate to. The third film in the franchise focused heavily on this and it would seem that “Toy Story 4” will too.
Much of the cause for why grown people will likely be bawling at the cinema will be a combination of nostalgia for the older films, the pain of loss and being directionless, and the weight of choices made. Because of all of this, “Toy Story 4” almost seems like it’s a movie made for the parents of children rather than the younger viewers themselves.
Of course, this is just speculation based entirely on the trailer. In fact, “Toy Story 4” could turn out almost the opposite of what is being hinted at, but this is unlikely. With Pixar being Pixar, this fourth installment in the storied franchise will likely squeeze every drop from every moviegoers’ eyes when it premieres.
Speaking of which, “Toy Story 4” will be hitting the big screen on June 21. Anyone who would rather avoid being seen crying to this upcoming movie might want to enter the cinema wearing sunglasses and a scarf around their heads. Then again, everyone will be bawling anyway, so what’s the point?
