Tobias Harris has reportedly opted to decline the Los Angeles Clippers’ offer of $80 million for him to extend his contract with the team, NBA.com reported. As such, the 26-year-old power forward will be eligible for free agency next year and will play his remaining months with the Clippers until his contract expires.
David Aldridge, a reporter for the Turner television network, broke the news via Twitter. Aldridge said that as Tobias Harris is slated to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, he’ll be eligible for a five-year $188 million max contract with the Clippers. However, if the power forward chooses to sign with any the other team, then he’ll be set for a $145.5 million four-year deal.
Tobias Harris has been an integral part of the Clippers' offense and defense, showing he can generate points and provide stops for the team. Last season, the seven-year veteran managed to average 19.3 points per game with 6.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals on a 41.4 three-point percentage.
Despite his age, Tobias Harris has already played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and Los Angeles Clippers. It can be recalled that he was part of the trade that sent Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons, with the deal including Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, and a 2018 first-round pick.
It’s still unknown at this point what Tobias Harris’s plans are, if he’s eyeing a team that will bring him a ring. It seems a lot of NBA stars lately have been trying to join rosters that would bring them the most chances of getting that highly coveted championship title.
Currently, the Golden State Warriors are still the heavy favorites to win yet another championship after they announced that they had added DeMarcus Cousins into their lineup for a measly $5.3 million deal. As for Tobias Harris, he still needs to finish his contract before he can make his next move. Will he opt for a lower salary to be part of a contender team or will he take the max deal? All fans can do is wait at this point.
