‘This is Us’ season 2 may feature a slimmer Kate. Actress Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson, addressed the contractual weight loss issue she reportedly had to face for the series.
According to Inquisitr, the show’s writers revealed that they plan to explore the characters more in the future of the series. This includes Metz’ Kate Pearson, Jack and Rebecca’s daughter and Kevin’s twin who struggles with issues of self-esteem stemming from her weight problems.
In the Thanksgiving episode, Kate was faced with the decision to get gastric bypass surgery as a solution to her obesity. Perhaps season 2 will feature a slimmer and, hopefully, happier Kate.
During an interview with TV Line, Metz admitted that her contract included a weight loss clause wherein she was required to lose weight as her character does in her storyline. She said, “In our contract, it did state that that would be a part of it, to lose the weight in the trajectory of the character as she comes to find herself.”
Metz continued, “That was a win-win for me. Because it’s one thing to try to do it on your own. But as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else.”
Although most of season 1 featured Kate’s struggles with her weight, Metz revealed that there have been “discussions” of the show focusing on other aspects of Kate’s life. She admitted her excitement at the prospect and said, “So I’m just rolling with the punches… I, as Chrissy, want to do things that mentally, emotionally and physically make me the best that I can be. That’s the intention for our writers and the development of the character.”
During a separate interview with ET, the 36-year old actress expressed her thoughts on what made the series as well as its characters relatable to its viewers. She also explained, “Aside from the fact that I could relate to being a plus-size girl in the business, you don’t see women like this on television… And I think it’s so important for women to see themselves in television and not these beautiful size zeroes.”
‘This Is Us’ is an American drama-comedy televisions series created by Dan Fogelman. It is executive produced by Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Charlie Gogolak, Glenn Ficara, and John Requa for NBC. The series premiered on the network on September 20, 2016 and was met with positive reviews from critics.
