‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 10, entitled “Last Christmas,” will follow Kate as she undergoes surgery as a child and considers getting one for her weight as an adult. Meanwhile, William’s past will be explored through the introduction of a new character.
The synopsis for “Last Christmas” posted on TV.com reads, “The Pearsons discover Dr. K (Gerald McRaney) alone at the hospital on Christmas Eve after Kate's (Chrissy Metz) afflicted with appendicitis. In the present, Kevin (Justin Hartley) celebrates Hanukkah with Olivia (Janet Montgomery); Kate pursues her big surgery; and someone from William's (Ron Cephas Jones) past resurfaces.”
The promo for the fall finale opens to Randall (Sterling K. Brown) meeting his mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) again after their fall-out from Thanksgiving. It seems that the Pearson family has to overcome some struggles over the Christmas holidays – including a trip to the operating room. By the end of the promo, Rebecca insists, “Nothing bad ever happens on Christmas Eve.”
It seems that the Pearsons will have to rush to the hospital instead of celebrating Christmas after Kate experiences abdominal pain. She has to undergo surgery for appendicitis. They then find Dr. K, the doctor who delivered Rebecca’s triplets, alone in the hospital.
In the present time, Kate is considering gastric bypass surgery to solve her weight issues. It is unclear whether she will be celebrating the holidays with her family instead of going for the operation.
Meanwhile, a new key character from William’s past will be introduced in the incoming episode. Denis O’Hare of ‘American Horror Story’ fame will play Jessie, someone William first met in Narcotics Anonymous.
Creator Dan Fogelman said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “He’s a guy who allows us to learn more about William’s old life before Randall had come knocking on his door… He’s a friend from back before.”
He continued, “And William on Christmas Eve returns home to take care of some stuff back at home, and through his old buddy, we get to learn more about William. It’s not what the episode is about, but because people have been asking, he holds the answer to what has happened to William’s cat.”
‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 10, entitled “Last Christmas,” is scheduled to air on NBC on December 6, 2016. It was directed by Academy Award-winning actress Helen Hunt.
