A car is one of the most dangerous places you can be. Many people are afraid to fly, but the chances of getting in a car accident is much greater. Everytime you get into your car, you have to take a lot of precautions to make sure that you stay safe.
For starters, you should practice defensive driving to try to minimize the risk of getting into an accident to begin with. Even if the accident wouldn’t be your fault, it is best to try to take action to make sure it doesn’t happen at all.
Then there is the issue of common accidents and places where they are likely to happen. If you know where the most common accidents take place then you can take extra precautions when you are in one of those areas to try to stay safe. In this article, we will go over where an accident is mostly likely to happen so you are more aware.
1 - Rural highways
It may seem like a congested and highly trafficked highway is going to see a lot more accidents. And they do in a way just simply based on the numbers. But, when there is a lot of traffic, people are mostly paying attention so they are able to avoid a lot of unnecessary accidents.
In contrast, a rural highway with not much traffic sees more accidents. People are less aware of other drivers when there are not that many cars on the road. In fact truck accidents can be more frequent for a number of reasons. Changing lanes or distracted driving from being tired makes the driver feel like they don’t have to pay as much attention. Ask any truck accident attorney and they will tell you that long distance truck drivers often let their guard down on these rural highways.
When you find yourself driving on a highway that doesn’t have much traffic, don’t assume you can change lanes without looking or that you can just stop paying attention. Stay focused and you will avoid an accident.
2 - Parking lots
One of the places where you have to be the most cautious in your car is when you are in a parking lot. These accidents may not result in anything serious as far as injuries go, but they can be quite expensive in terms of damage.
The problem is that there is a lot of congestion in a parking lot and people can get aggressive as they vie for a spot closest to the store entrance. Add the fact that people don’t do well when the car is in reverse and you have an accident waiting to happen.
3 - 4 way stops
Many drivers tend to do the rolling stop at a stop sign. When faced with a 4 way stop, often they roll on through and this causes an accident as there are other cars that are doing the same thing. Make sure to come to a complete stop and watch for other cars approaching the intersection.
