The Philippines does not expect a slowdown in military cooperation with the United States despite the redeployment of some American defense assets from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East, a Philippine military official said Monday.

Roy Vincent Trinidad, a military spokesperson, said Manila remains confident in Washington’s commitment to the Philippines and the broader Indo-Pacific region. His comments followed the movement of U.S. military assets, including the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, toward the Middle East, raising questions about America’s defense posture in Asia.

“We do not foresee any dip or any slowing down in our activities,” Trinidad said during a press briefing, stressing that the U.S.-Philippines defense relationship remains “ironclad.”

The Philippines is among the United States’ closest defense allies in Asia. The two countries are bound by a decades-old Mutual Defense Treaty, along with agreements covering visiting U.S. forces and American access to military facilities across the Philippines.

U.S. and Philippine forces conduct dozens of joint military activities, exercises and war games each year, involving thousands of troops. Manila has also approved a new slate of activities for the coming year, including large-scale military exercises, training programs and expert exchanges.

The Philippine military’s confidence comes as President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, citing their cost and Seoul’s refusal to participate in actions against Iran.

During a visit to Manila last week, Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific. He said the United States was not disengaging from Asia and remained focused on maintaining a favorable balance of power in the region.

For the Philippines, the continued military exercises and planned defense activities signal that U.S.-Philippines security cooperation remains a key pillar of regional defense strategy.
