Book fans now have more reason to wait for the release of “The Winds of Winter.” Best-selling author and creator of Westeros, George R.R. Martin, recently confirmed that some deaths that happened in the “Game of Thrones” TV series are not happening in his books.
Given his busy schedule of finishing books and shows, Martin declared a long time ago that he would not be attending many conventions in the foreseeable future. But there are some events that he could not miss like the one dedicated to the Locus Science Fiction Foundation earlier this month in Redwood City, California. Martin, alongside John Picacio, entertained questions during a panel on-stage interview, including those related to “The Winds of Winter.”
“Game of Thrones” has been known as one of the TV shows that would not hesitate to kill off a character no matter how much fans love them. Many might agree that the only satisfying onscreen death was that of Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) in season 4. However, the last couple of seasons featured a significantly higher number of deaths as if it is eager to fulfill the whole essence of Valar Morghulis.
The HBO series’ season 7 has been regarded as the parallel plot of “The Winds of Winter.” So some have been expecting that the deaths seen on TV will most likely be retold once the sixth “A Song of Ice and Fire” book comes out. However, George R.R. Martin clearly stated it is not the case. Some characters that fans saw dying on TV will actually survive in “The Winds of Winter.”
“[Some characters] who died in the show will NEVER die in the books,” the author reportedly said. In a Reddit post summarizing the on-stage interview, Martin also stated that the TV show is “killing a lot more people” than what he envisioned.
As expected, George R.R. Martin cannot escape a question about when “The Winds of Winter” is going to be released. The question came from John Picacio, to which Martin replied, “Working on it, believe me, you'll know when it's done. It'll be the shout that is heard 'round the world." And if there is one thing Martin confirmed about this matter, it’s the fact that “The Winds of Winter” is not coming out in 2018.
