Fans obviously still want to hear new updates about “The Winds of Winter.” Many are particularly keen on knowing when the sixth “A Song of Ice and Fire” book is going to be released but, unfortunately, its announcement still seems elusive.
At an event for The Locus Science Fiction Foundation in August, the author did not give many details about his progress in writing “The Winds of Winter.” The latest and only update coming from author George R.R. Martin is that he is still “working on it.”
The fact that Martin does not have much to say about “The Winds of Winter” at recent events he attended suggests that the wait for the book will be extended for quite some time. For now, fans can only relish the crumbs of spoilers that the best-selling author has previously confirmed.
For one, Martin said at the same event that the “Game of Thrones” TV series had killed more characters than he did (or will) in “The Winds of Winter.” But whoever stays alive in the books is still a mystery.
Earlier this year, Martin also confirmed that Lady Stoneheart is still an important character in “The Winds of Winter.” One of the major changes between the book and TV franchises involves the resurrection of Catelyn Stark, who was portrayed by Michelle Fairley in “Game of Thrones.”
“In [‘The Winds of Winter’], I still continue to write her,” Martin previously told Esquire. “She is an important character in the set of books. [Keeping her character] is the change I most wish I could make in the [show].”
In related news, Martin recently revealed that he tried to haggle to have 10 seasons of “Game of Thrones” but showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff decided otherwise. At the 70th Emmy Awards red carpet, Martin told Variety that the show could have had as many as 13 seasons. But the showrunners originally wanted to have seven seasons at the maximum. “We got them to go to eight but not any more than that,” Martin added.
George R.R. Martin is also currently working on developing several prequel TV shows that will be released after “Game of Thrones” wraps up. As for “The Winds of Winter,” Martin only confirmed it is not coming out this year.
