“The Winds of Winter” is still a work in progress despite a nine-year gap from the fifth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series that was released in 2011. George RR Martin was supposed to be released “TWOW” a few times but he always postponed it to a later time because apparently, it is not yet finished.
After delaying the release more than once, it is understandable why fans are disappointed and some are even angrily calling out the 71-year-old author now. They are frustrated and Martin admitted that he too, is upset that he could not finish the book on time. He said that “The Winds of Winter” could have been released a long time ago and yet, it is still in writing.
Book release update
Last year, in May, Martin vowed to release “The Winds of Winter” in late July or August this year. To make fans believe him this time, he even gave them his permission to have him locked up in a cabin so he can finish the sixth book in his “ASOIAF” collection. This was his latest promise
to the fans but sadly, this too could be another one of his broken promises since the current coronavirus pandemic that the whole world is dealing with today could affect the release.
Although Martin could really finish the book by on the day of the Worldcon in New Zealand, the problem is he might not be able to publish it as he likes due to the situation. In fact, even the Worldcon has been canceled already so is Martin’s appearance as a guest in the event.
Staying positive amid the global pandemic
While the COVID-19 is bad news for everyone around the world, many positive things are also happening like the reduced pollution, people are opting to live a healthy lifestyle and cleaner surroundings, in case of “The Winds of Winter,” the good thing is that GRRM may finally complete the book. This is due to the fact, that he has been in self-isolation for a long time now and even himself is convinced that that pandemic and ongoing lockdowns have a silver lining.
He could focus now on writing “TWOW” and there is no distraction because he is only being accompanied by one of his staff. They are in a cabin and he is writing the book non-stop now. Thus, the completion of the book could really be near.
“In other virus-related news, conventions and festivals and sporting events continue to cancel or postpone all over the world, including SF cons,” the famous author wrote on his blog on April 2. “If there is a silver lining in these clouds, this will give me more time to finish ‘WINDS OF WINTER.’ I continue to write every day, up here in my mountain fastness.”
