Fans are wondering what happened to “Sherlock” season 5 because it has been more than three years since the fourth installment aired. The truth is, even up to now, no knows its status on BBC broadcasting station but sometimes there are statements directly coming from the series’ showrunners Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat so their words have become the source of updates for this much-awaited detective drama.
It can’t be helped if some fans think that the series has been pulled out already since there is no news coming from BBC plus even the pre-production works are not even moving yet. Is “Sherlock” season 5 really canceled?
Clarification on cancellation rumors
Apparently, “Sherlock” season 5 is not yet canceled. It has been on hiatus for a long time but despite being on hold, the network did not release any memo about its cancellation.
Plus, Gattis and Moffat explained that their show is just delayed and this is due to a lot of factors. The showrunners stated in interviews that they are still interested in doing more seasons of the drama, however, their other works have been keeping them busy that they don’t have enough time left for “Sherlock” season 5.
The showrunners’ stance on season 5 renewal
They said that if they do the fifth season, they want to focus on it only and they can’t do it right now or in the last three years since the fourth season ended. Sure, they can work on “Sherlock” season 5 first and let their other projects wait but they have to consider the main cast members’ schedules too as even them are busy with their movie or drama shoots.
“I haven't really thought about it,” Moffat previously told Digital Spy. “Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series."
Moffat added in another interview that he and Mark Gattis are always willing to do “Sherlock” season 5. He said that they know the fans want it and they also wish that they could grant their wish as soon as possible but it is still difficult at the moment. They promised though that once their schedules cleared up, there is no reason why they can’t proceed with the fifth season.
