Two of the series’ core characters are leaving in “The Walking Dead” season 9. More recently, it was confirmed that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is going to exit from the show she has been on for close to a decade.
Cohan first joined the series for the recurring role of Maggie in season 2, which aired in 2011. But in the following season, she was promoted as a series regular, headlining the series along with other core characters up to “The Walking Dead” season 9.
As fans await “The Walking Dead” season 9’s premiere with excitement, they are also hit with the fact that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie are leaving in one of the upcoming episodes. Actors’ exit from the TV series could be very gruesome — cases in point: Maggie’s now dead husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Michael Cudlitz’s Abraham Ford.
However, Maggie’s exit is interesting. It is now somehow confirmed that her character will not face death. And it adds more reason to be curious what will go wrong between her and her allies in “The Walking Dead” season 9 which will lead to her decision to leave.
As expected, Lauren Cohan is tight-lipped about any spoilers on her final scenes as Maggie in “The Walking Dead” season 9. But in a recent interview with GameSpot, the “Mile 22” actress spilled some more insight about her exit.
"It feels like the greatest way to honor it is to keep it open-ended because whether it's about me going back as Maggie or whether it's about me just taking in, absorbing, and honoring everything I've learned there," said Cohan. "It never leaves me. It will never, ever leave me. And that is I think the greatest compliment you can give to anything and to any group of people because we all came together to make something that we didn't know was going to have this success that it did."
With an open-ended story, fans are likely going to hope that the future seasons of the series will include Maggie’s return. However, Cohan also noted that this kind of departure is not an assurance that she will step back on the zombie apocalypse set for an appearance beyond “The Walking Dead” season 9. The show returns on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
