“The Purge” Season 2 has been greenlighted by cable network USA following the finale of the previous installment on Tuesday night. While some fans were worried that the show will only be a onetime deal, the ratings of the first season all but confirmed that a second installment is happening, CarterMatt reported.
The decision to commission “The Purge” Season 2 comes amidst the first installment’s 0.4 average rating among the 18-49 demographic. And given that the films themselves have created a cult following among viewers, it’s no surprise that USA is thrilled to bring the series back.
Chris McCumber, president of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, released a statement on Tuesday expressing his excitement at the stories they’re going to tell. He also thanked executive producer Jason Blum, Blumhouse Television, and Universal Pictures for the trusting USA to handle the franchise’s transition from film to television. Right now, there’s little information about “The Purge” Season 2 and its plotline.
This is doubly true since the show has a lot of potential to be an anthology series rather than having an overarching plot. This isn’t to say that the latter is a bad choice. It just means that the writers have a lot of avenues to explore that would provide “The Purge” Season 2 with a compelling and spine-chilling storyline.
It goes without saying that the show will accumulate even more fans once the “The Purge” Season 2 gets released. However, the franchise did receive damning publicity recently as riots in the deprived Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris broke out during Halloween night. The chaos is reportedly caused by messages circulated in social media calling out for violence inspired by “The Purge” film. French police arrested more than 100 youths who participated in the riots, although authorities said that the damages weren’t as severe compared to previous years.
While the turmoil should be condemned, the uprising can also serve as another avenue for writers to explore in “The Purge” Season 2. It may highlight the dangers caused by such lawlessness and the consequences that follow after the turbulence dies down.
Whatever the case, “The Purge” Season 2 is happening and fans of the franchise are excited what’s in store in the second installment. Right now, details regarding when USA will air season two is still unknown given that the announcement was made pretty recently. Hopefully, the production process wouldn’t be delayed by any unforeseeable circumstances and “The Purge” Season 2 will be released sometime around the fall of 2019.
