Netflix's historical drama based on the novel series "The Saxon Stories" by Bernard Cornwell may not be the first of his series to have long production times in between season. His original books based on the fictional Green Jacket rags-to-glory officer, Richard Sharpe, has had a more spaced-out release compared to his new baby series, “The Last Kingdom”. Still, fans will be glad to know that “The Last Kingdom” season 3 has been in production since its renewal last April.
According to OtakuKart, while the show's previous seasons were co-produced by the BBC and Netflix, “The Last Kingdom” season 3 will be solely produced by the streaming giant. If fans are concerned by the sudden change of hands for the series, they can be assured that Cornwell himself is still highly involved with “The Last Kingdom” season 3's production.
Cornwell himself answered questions in a Q&A covered by Express. In the Q&A, Bernard Cornwell confirmed the shift from a BBC-Netflix partnership to a sole Netflix production for “The Last Kingdom” season 3. Cornwell also noted that with the filming for the upcoming installment already ongoing, fans can hopefully expect “The Last Kingdom” season 3 to be broadcast on Netflix sometime in the fall of this year.
While Cornwell has stated a potential fall release for “The Last Kingdom” season 3, Netflix has yet to provide an official target date for when the upcoming installment will be featured on the streaming service. Considering that other Netflix productions such as “Narcos: Mexico” already have confirmed broadcast dates for the fall of 2018, fans will just have to be ready for a potential 2019 release for the series.
Fans looking forward to the continuing story of “The Last Kingdom” season 3 can expect the upcoming installment to cover Cornwell's fifth and sixth books. With "The Saxon Stories" being a 10-book series, fans can hopefully be assured that the show can follow the book series's longevity in Netflix's hands.
