It was understandable if some fans lost hope that “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2 was ever going to happen because it took half a decade before a new anime installment was announced. It also turns out that even the creator of the same title light novel series, Tsutomu Sato, had the same thought before the anime was renewed last month.
‘The Irregular At Magic High School' season 2 release date and announcement
Even though it took a long while before the anime series was confirmed to continue, the franchise was active on other fronts. In 2017, a movie was released with an original story not based on the light novels but adapted several aspects of the ensuing story arcs from where season 1 ended. It might have added to the speculations that “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2 is unlikely getting released.
Sato was most likely aware of the “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2 production even before it was announced to the public last month. But he confirmed to Crunchyroll that he was also surprised the first time he was told about the anime series renewal.
“I had thought that 'The Girl Who Calls the Stars' film was the last one in The Irregular at Magic High School's anime adaptation project,” Sato said about learning of “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2’s production. “So I am especially happy that we will show the activities of Tatsuya, Miyuki, and their friends in the anime once again.”
8Bit, the studio producing “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2, has yet to announce other key details about the series’s return. What’s confirmed for now is that most of the voice cast members will reprise their roles, new episodes will premiere in 2020, and they will cover the Visitor Arc.

As mentioned, the 2017 anime movie was not based on any originally released light novel, but a light novel volume was released after it premiered now labeled as volume 11.5. It also has some elements similar to the original series, such as the introduction of Angelina “Lina” Kudou Shields. The character’s arrival is going to be one of the highlights of “The Irregular At Magic High School” season 2, as she will play an important role in the upcoming story arc.
