The Department of Justice Wants Your Thanksgiving Leftovers

Terre Haute, Indiana, Dec. 05, 2017 -- What happens to all those extra turkeys who are spared from the thanksgiving dinner table? One place they might end up is the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. A new contract solicitation from the Bureau of Prisons under the Department of Justice requests bids for deilvery of over 28,000 pounds of turkey. A small business must submit their pricing bid by December 8, 2017.

A capable business for this contract should be able to supply 17,500 lbs. of raw ground turkey, 8000 lbs. of raw turkey roasts and 3000 lbs. of raw turkey bacon. There are additional specifications about the requirements for this meat which can be found on the solicitation at Fbo.gov.

Don’t forget the spices! In a separate solicitation posted on the same day, the agency asked for about 25 pounds of thyme. There are additional opportunities for small businesses to provide other spices and other meats as well.

A reverse auction will be held on Fedbid.com to determine the best possible offer. The solicitation did not list a delivery date, but did declare that bids must be valid for sixty calendar days after the bidding closes. They are only soliciting small businesses. A business is considered small for this procurement if they employ 500 people or less. Any further questions should be directed to the “Submit a Question” feature on Fedbid.com.

In addition to being registered on Fedbid.com, companies also need to be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) before submitting a bid to the government. SAM registration is free, but help is available for a fee to companies who need assistance filling out the form. This assistance can greatly accelerate the process for acquiring a contract. Third-party registration is recommended for businesses that might not have the manpower, time or expertise to quickly turn themselves into eligible government contractors.
