“The Blacklist” season 6 has high expectations to surmount after the massive plot twist that the show's previous season dropped. James Spader's Red Reddington admitting to the fact that he is an imposter has had fans excited for the upcoming installment's return to gain more clarity about the show's newest twist. But some fans are not taking Red Reddington's statements at face value, preferring to believe that the cunning criminal mastermind is lying and has a more complex plot in mind.

Theories about “The Blacklist” season 6 revealing another potential twist have abounded ever since season 5 ran its season finale. One of the more popular theories involves the potential twist that James Spader's Red Reddington is actually one of twins. This could potentially explain how Red is able to claim that he is an imposter, as well as confirm that the bones revealed to be in the bag belong to the same person.

Thankfully, this theory is massively simpler compared to the convoluted fan theories being posted on Reddit. There are “The Blacklist” season 6 theories which anticipate the potential for James Spader's Red Reddington to be an undercover CIA agent trying to infiltrate a criminal cabal by taking on the identity of the real – and very much dead – Red Reddington. Other theories posit that Red Reddington is simply another family member who has taken on Red Reddington's name.

But the craziest “The Blacklist” season 6 theory about Red Reddington's identity is none other than the popular “Rederina” theory. This popular fan theory argues that James Spader's Reddington is actually Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek) who has undergone a sex change and plastic surgery before assuming the identity of Red Reddington.

Regardless of which theory fans may subscribe to, it is quite clear that the season 5 finale's plot twist has enough room for James Spader's Red Reddington to still turn out to be Red Reddington in “The Blacklist” season 6. Hopefully, such clarifications get tackled in the upcoming show's early episodes when it returns in January 2019.
