A recent test conducted by OpenSignal puts T-Mobile in the lead once again for having the fastest internet speeds of any major ISP. The Uncarrier earned the same distinction the last time OpenSignal conducted the same test, signaling a trend that customers might start noticing. No doubt T-Mobile is going to milk this achievement for all its worth.
As Fortune reports, OpenSignal basically measures internet speeds through an app test that is used by thousands of users all over the country. In terms of average 4G internet speeds, T-Mobile was at 19.4 Megabytes per second (Mbps). In comparison, Verizon only measured at 17.8Mbps and AT&T was at 13.3Mbps. Sprint, which is smaller than T-Mobile only stood at 12Mbps.
“T-Mobile has clearly taken advantage of Verizon’s 4G speed challenges,” OpenSignal’s Q4 report reads. “While last year the two were tied in LTE speed, T-Mobile is now clearly locked into the lead spot of OpenSignal’s 4G speed rankings.”
It would appear that T-Mobile also snagged the honors for being the most available carrier in terms of 4G connectivity, with its customers getting 4G speeds about 93.1 percent of the time. In comparison, Verizon could only allow the same connectivity to customers 92.7 percent of the time and AT&T’s availability was only at 87 percent.
In fact, according to OpenSignal’s published data, T-Mobile scored high in practically every single measure, outdoing rivals in every field that matters. While Verizon and AT&T still hold the position of dominance in terms of size, their smaller competitor is clearly running around them in circles.
“T-Mobile may have had the upper hand in our nationwide metrics, but in our city analysis, Verizon and T-Mobile were in a heated battle for dominance. One of the two operators either won outright or tied for our 4G speed and availability awards in all of the 32 markets we examined,” the report reads.
