Blizzard has been on a roll recently, with revivals and expansions of its most popular titles raining down on gamers before and after BlizzCon. Now, one of the publisher’s most long-standing titles StarCraft II is free for gamers to download and play. There are going to be some limitations, but being able to try the game’s campaign mode more than makes it worthy of interest.
Starting November 14th, the hugely popular real-time strategy game is free to be downloaded and played all the way to the entirety of the campaign mode, Wings of Liberty. This is only for those who don’t already have StarCraft II. Those who already bought the game, they can instead get the expansion Heart of the Swarm, but only if they bought the game before November 8th and if they don’t already have the DLC.
As for the other parts of the free experience, the co-op commanders aspect is also unlocked, though most characters can only be leveled up to level five. On the other hand, characters like Raynor and Kerrigan are already available, along with Artanis, all of whom are not subject to the level cap.
Just for context, the expansions for StarCraft II still run up to $15 each, GameSpot reports. That’s $15 that new players can save when downloading this free version of the game instead of paying for it.
For those who have never played the game or any of Blizzard’s other titles, downloaded StarCraft II for free will require a Blizzard Battle.net account. Signing up can be done with a Facebook account, so anyone who prefers to avoid the tedium of manually inputting details can choose to do that.
Once an account is made, players can simply visit the game’s homepage in order to download it. The title is compatible with both PC and Mac units.
