“Shrek 5” was confirmed a few years back when Dreamworks was bought by Comcast NBCUniversal. This is said to be the first animation that the merged companies are planning to release, but then it was not the first project to go into production under the new management.
The “Shrek” script
It took years before a new update for “Shrek 5” to arrives that fans even thought that the movie had been canceled already. But then, it is still in the works, and as proof, it was reported that its script has officially been completed.
The film’s new writer, Michael McCullers, was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, and he confirmed that “Shrek 5” is still in the cards. He then mentioned that it is truly happening because the script is complete, and pre-production has started.
"’Shrek 5’ is being developed,” he told the publication. “I finished that script, which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me.”
The writer added that the fifth film installment of “Shrek ” will be different from the first four films as they will be changing some things in the plot and scenarios. Then again, he did not say what exactly will change in the movie.
“It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level," McCullers added.
Why is the movie delayed?
The script is ready since 2017, but why is it taking time for Dreamworks to release “Shrek 5?” According to Deadline, the fifth movie in the series is in the works already, but there are reasons why it is delayed, such as Dreamworks’s decision to finish and release the sequel of the “Puss In Boots” movie first. Almost all the staff working on “Shrek 5” are the same ones who are handling “Puss in Boots”; that is why one of them has to wait.
When will it be released?
There is no word when “Shrek 5” is coming out, but based on the supposedly leaked information, Universal Pictures may release this DreamWorks movie in 2022. Several dates were considered, and if it is correct, it will arrive on Sept. 23, 2022.
