“Shrek 5” has been confirmed a long time ago so fans are wondering what happened to it since the movie is not even in production yet. Many think that Dreamworks already gave up and probably planning to do newer movie titles instead of a follow-up, but had the studio really removed this animation in its lineup?
Cancellation rumors
There are actually rumors that “Shrek 5” will no longer proceed. Sreenrant reported that based on the rumors, shortly after the movie was confirmed and started its pre-production works, another movie entered the picture and this was “Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and Forty Thieves.”
This “Puss in Boots” sequel is rumored to be released in 2021 and as its production clashes with “Shrek 5,” the studio seemed to have prioritized the former so the latter was said to have been canceled. However, in 2019, news that the fifth Shrek 5 is back in production surfaced and there was even an alleged leaked report that stated when it will be released.
Filming schedule - When will the production start?
As mentioned, there was a leaked report that confirmed a “Shrek 5” release date. It was revealed that the movie is coming out on Sept. 23, 2022. Now, with this date, if it is true, it is likely that filming will begin soon if it has not started yet.
Filming an animation takes longer to complete so they need at least over a year to film. This is enough time for the production team to finish the project before the deadline.
Plot predictions
When “Shrek 5” returns, it was previously revealed that NBCUniversal wants Dreamworks to reinvent the movie. Since this is the case, it is clear that the upcoming flick will not be a sequel but rather, a reboot.
Most likely, “Shrek 5” will be a modernized version of the past films since this is what Universal wants. The story is actually complete already as Michael McCullers, the film’s new writer, has finished the script a long time ago, as per Den of Geek. Then again, there’s a chance that they could still restructure or adjust the story to be more appropriate in this time period.
