“Shrek 5” has been in the works for quite some time now but fans are disappointed because they don’t see any update regarding the progress in its production. Even a simple mention that the movie is being made will be enough but years after Dreamworks confirmed the movie, no news about it ever came out again.
This is why many people think that it was already canceled to give way to newer animation flicks. Dreamworks and Comcast NBCUniversal are one company now after the latter bought the former, and back then, it was said that “Shrek 5” will be their first project as a merged studio so this was how the movie was announced. There is no report of cancellation since the movie has been confirmed so it can be assumed that it is still in the cards.
The cause of the delay
Rather than being canceled, “Shrek 5” is just delayed for now. While it was revealed that its script had long been completed in 2017, Dreamworks has a reason why this movie is not out yet. Firstly, Deadline reported that pre-production works have started but filming couldn’t commence as it was suddenly decided that “Puss in Boots” will be made first.
Contrary to the original plan, “Shrek 5” will be shelved for a bit to give way to the “Puss In Boots” sequel. The movies could have been made simultaneously but this is impossible because most of the people behind “Shrek” are the same ones who handle the Antonion Banderas movie.
“‘Shrek 5’ is being developed,” Michael McCullers, the animated film’s new writer, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I finished that script, which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me.”
The changes to expect in the film
When “Shrek 5” arrives, the viewers will see a very different theme and story. It was clarified that this is not a sequel but a reboot so the fifth movie will no pick up from where the fourth left off. This is a whole new story and the reason why McCullers was hired was to give it a new angle and fresh concept.
“It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal,” the writer explained. “But since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level."
Release date
“Shrek 5” has no release date yet but based on the alleged leaked detail, it will be out in cinemas on Sept. 23, 2022.
